A General Bachelor of Arts, Liberal Studies is the preference of students who wish to take courses in a wide variety of subjects without concentration in a single subject area. This program is available as a Three-Year (15 Unit) or a Four-Year (20 Unit) degree.
NOTE: Students attending in Fall 2012 or later may choose to pursue a minor.
All Bachelor of Arts (BA) students must meet the BA Breadth Requirements:
Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts 0.5 unit: DAC, DRAMA, FINE, MUSIC, SPCOM, VCULT Humanities 1.0 unit: CLAS, ENGL, HIST, MEDVL, PHIL, RS Languages and Cultures 1.0 unit: CHINA, CROAT, DUTCH, EASIA, FR, GER, GRK, ITAL, ITALST, JAPAN, JS, KOREA, LAT, POLSH, PORT, REES, RUSS, SI, SPAN. See Notes 3 and 4 below. Social Sciences 2.0 units: ANTH, ECON, GEOG, INTTS, PSCI, PSYCH, SDS/ISS*, SOC. See Note 1 below. Transdisciplinary Studies 0.5 unit: AFM, APPLS, ARBUS, ARTS, CMW, HRM, HUMSC, INTST, LS, NATST, PACS, SMF, SOCWK, SPD*, WS. Also any course taken in another University of Waterloo faculty. See Note 5 below.

NOTE(S): 1. No more than one academic course unit (two courses) in the same discipline may count towards the Social Sciences requirement. 2. Cross-listed courses may be designated to fulfill any one requirement. For example, a student registered in PACS203/HIST 232 may receive credit for either the Transdisciplinary Studies requirement or the Humanities requirement, but not for both. 3. Students enrolled in the Rhetoric and Professional Writing (RPW) plan offered by the English Department must take two language courses (i.e., culture courses taught in English will not fulfill the requirement for these students). RPW students may take two courses in different languages. 4. Language courses accepted as transfer credits, including courses in American Sign Language, may be counted towards the Languages and Cultures requirement. 5. Because PD courses are not regular academic courses, they do not fulfill any of the breadth requirements.
*Eligibility for graduation in the Three-Year General Liberal Studies academic plan includes successful fulfillment of the following requirements:
1. Appropriate Program-level (BA) requirements. See BA Degree Requirements. 2. Liberal Studies Plan-level requirements: * at least 7.5 academic course units (15 courses) in the Faculty of Arts with a minimum cumulative average of 65%, including: -a minimum of one academic course unit (two courses) at the 300-level or above
Eligibility for graduation in the Four-Year General Liberal Studies academic plan includes successful fulfillment of the following requirements:
1. Appropriate Program-level (BA) requirements. See BA Degree Requirements. 2. Liberal Studies Plan-level requirements: * at least 12.5 academic course units (25 courses) in the Faculty of Arts with a minimum cumulative average of 65%, including: -a minimum of two academic course units (four courses) at the 300-level or above.
