Planning to graduate in 2020
Moving to Ontario from British Columbia signaled a time to change careers for Afsheen Khalil. With a referral from the Goodwill Career Centre in London to the Contact North | Contact Nord online learning centre in St. Thomas, Afsheen received support in exploring online college programs.
Afsheen earned an Early Childhood Education Diploma while living in British Columbia, operated a daycare for many years and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Karachi before immigrating to Canada.
With support from Contact North | Contact Nord staff, she enrolled in Quinte Adult Education’s Mathematics for College Technology (College) Grade 12 course and English (Workplace) Grade 12 course. These courses are recommended for entry to Fanshawe College’s Computer Analyst program.
“I worked in the library,” she says. “It was out of the house and quiet.” When she had questions about her coursework, she sought out a neighbour who was good at math.
After completing the required Mathematics and English courses, she enrolled in Fanshawe College’s Computer Analyst program. However, after the first term, she decided it was not a good fit and switched to the online Business - Accounting program.
“The instructors reply to e-mails within 48 hours and we have a discussion board,” Afsheen explains. “We also work on group projects in some of the courses.”
Afsheen is pleased with her final choice and plans to graduate with her Business - Accounting diploma in 2020.
