Plans to graduate in Spring 2020
After losing her job, Annie Roy learned about Contact North | Contact Nord and the Ontario Government’s Second Career program. With the support of staff at the Contact North | Contact Nord online learning centre in Longlac, Annie enrolled in Northern College’s online Social Service Worker program.
“I took the opportunity to go back to school and Contact North helped me find the program,” says Annie. She connected to her classes at the online learning centre using Contact North | Contact Nord’s web conferencing platform. “There were less distractions at the online learning centre, and help was available if I needed it,” she explains.
After graduating from the Social Service Worker program, she enrolled in Laurentian University/Université Laurentienne’s online Bachelor of Indigenous Social Work program. She is learning to be more self-disciplined with her university studies.
She is currently employed in the field as a mental health counsellor while working towards her degree. She doesn’t feel so alone as co-workers took the same program and she can discuss any challenges with them. She says the opportunity to remain in her community with her family is beneficial; however, she admits balancing work, family and school is demanding. “Sometimes I want to give up but my partner jumps in and helps out more,” she shares.
Annie plans to graduate in Spring 2020 after completing her placement
