Graduating with her Ontario Secondary School Diploma in Spring 2019
When Ashley Reid was on maternity leave in 2018, she decided to finally complete her high school diploma. With a referral to Contact North | Contact Nord, she used their services to enrol in Quinte Adult Education’s online Ontario Secondary School Diploma program.
“I knew you could do college courses online but I didn’t think I could do high school online,” says Ashley. With two young children under 5, she worked on her courses from her home computer when they were sleeping.
“I had a tutor for the first courses,” she explains. The tutor was provided by another community agency. “If I had any misunderstandings she would help me.” The last time Ashley was in school was over 15 years ago. She left school at the age of 14 and worked in a fast food chain. She progressed to a management position without needing her high school diploma.
“I don’t think I would have been able to do it any other way,” she admits. “I am more confident now, I wasn’t even good with computers when I started and now I don’t have to ask for help.”
Ashley completed six courses in just two years and will be graduating in June 2019. Once her children are in school full-time, she plans to enrol in a college program.
