Pursuing online professional development courses while seeking full-time work
Living in a rural area and being unemployed can be challenging. Chris Varga is grateful for the support offered by staff at the Contact North | Contact Nord online learning centre in Bracebridge who helped him to research study options for professional development.
He first enrolled in Lynda.com’s Learning Excel course to upgrade his knowledge and use of Excel software. Through a partnership with Brampton Library, Chris has free access to Lynda.com courses and completed 6 courses, including Learning Construction Estimating and AutoCad 2020 Essential Training.
“I am always upgrading my education,” he explains. “YouTube is my favourite thing ever invented because I can watch videos over and over until I understand and with Lynda.com, it offers guided video courses.”
Chris previously worked in management and construction and hopes the professional development courses improve his credentials for finding work in the field. He lives a 25-minute drive outside of Bracebridge and appreciates the high-speed Internet access that allows him to take courses from his home computer.
