Graduated Spring 2017
Corrine Patchett decided to change careers after taking a 4-month break from work to heal from a physical injury. With the help of staff at the Contact North | Contact Nord online learning centre in Bracebridge, she learned about and enrolled in Fleming College’s online Office Administration program.
“I was unsure about online learning,” admitted Corinne. It was decades since she attended school and had little experience with technology. She worked as a waitress for many years and wanted an office job.
She received support from the Ontario Government’s Second Career program and treated her studies like a job. “For online learning you have to treat it like a job to keep on track. I would go to the centre and focus on school for 4 or 5 hours and then go home,” she explained.
When it came to group projects, a challenging aspect of online learning, she connected and worked with like-minded students. They were efficient and productive by using WhatsApp, a smartphone application for communicating by using text. They organized conference calls, shared information and supported each other through their studies.
Corrine said the experience pushed her to find solutions, whether seeking support from staff at the Contact North | Contact Nord online learning centre, on the Internet, or from family members.
Although a challenge to adjust when she started the program, Corinne wished she had known how easy it was to obtain a college certificate online. She plans to continue taking online courses.
