Daniella Howson of Orléans experienced a dream come true when she graduated from Confederation College with the Educational Support Diploma. With the support of the Contact North | Contact Nord online learning centre in Orléans, she was able to complete the program online; from her home computer, without leaving her community.
“I need the flexibility of online learning with two young children,” explained Daniella. She had a four-year-old and a six-year-old at the time, making for a very busy period in her family life. She worked as a Massage Therapist for six years and wanted a career change that would allow her to work with children. Through exploring the Internet, she found two preferred options: an on-campus Early Childhood Education Diploma program at Algonquin College’s Ottawa campus and the online Educational Support Diploma program offered by Confederation College, based in Thunder Bay. Once she chose an online program, she attended her classes using Contact North | Contact Nord’s web conferencing platform from her home computer and wrote exams at the centre.
“Online learning is better than I thought it would be. Very nice being able to work from home,” said Daniella. “The family had to adjust. We sometimes had to miss out on activities because I had school work, but everyone was supportive.”
She found the instructors in the Educational Support Diploma program were helpful and understanding and she formed supportive relationships with classmates through connecting in chat rooms and working on projects together, despite the distance.
