Plans to complete the course in Winter 2020
For Dina Attar, a newcomer from Iraq, online learning is vital to her integration to Canada. With a referral from Atikokan Adult Learning Centre to the Contact North | Contact Nord online learning centre in Atikokan, she enrolled in Lakehead District School Board - Adult Education Centre’s online English as a Second Language course.
Dina is a pharmacist, however, must acquire a Canadian license to work in Canada. The licensing process includes several exams, including an English language exam. While living in a rural and remote community, she connects to her course and instructor from her laptop.
“When I arrived here, I was afraid I would be completely isolated because I am so far away from a city,” she explains. “The online program helps a lot.”
The course includes weekly assignments and an opportunity to connect to the instructor over the telephone. She dedicates several hours a day to working on the course and receives additional assistance from the Atikokan Adult Learning Centre.
She has come to enjoy living in Atikokan and appreciates the support from staff at the Contact North | Contact Nord online learning centre and the Atikokan Adult Learning Centre.
Dina plans to complete the English as a Second Language course in Winter 2020.
