Graduated with PreHealth Sciences Certificate in 2019 and applied to University of Ottawa for the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Mechanical Engineering program
Elizabeth Abbott enrolled in Confederation College’s online PreHealth Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program and learned about the support and services provided by Contact North | Contact Nord.
Living in Ottawa, she connected to her classes from her home computer using Contact North | Contact Nord’s web conferencing platform. “Online learning was interesting,” she shares. “I learned a lot and appreciated how hard it is for instructors to teach without students in front of them and they did a good job.”
She built supportive relationships with instructors and classmates despite the distance. “We had the same instructors for several courses, they get to know you and you them,” she says. She appreciates the guidance and encouragement from her Physics instructor. After discussions with her instructor, she rethought her application for an undergraduate degree. “I decided to pursue a biomedical mechanical engineering degree,” she explains.
Elizabeth made friends with classmates also living in southern Ontario while working on class projects together. “We used video calls to collaborate,” she explains. She has a whole new perspective about online learning and particularly northern Ontario issues.
Elizabeth continues to work part-time and appreciates the flexibility of online learning. “Most challenging part of online learning is sitting down at my computer at home and not being distracted,” she shares. She writes all of her exams at the Contact North | Contact Nord online learning centre in Orléans.
Elizabeth graduated with her PreHealth Sciences Certificate in Spring 2019 and applied to University of Ottawa for the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Mechanical Engineering program.
