Planning to graduate in December 2019
Through a referral from YMCA Employment and Immigration Services in St. Catharines, Lucine Tchakerian received support from staff at the Contact North | Contact Nord online learning centre in St. Catharines to enrol in Northern College’s online Law Clerk program.
Lucine connects to her live classes on Contact North | Contact Nord’s web conferencing platform. “Contact North staff showed me how to register for the program, helped me find funding and went step-by-step with getting online to my classes,” she explains. Going back to school at 50 years of age was a daunting endeavour, but she appreciates the support offered by the college and Contact North | Contact Nord staff.
Initially she was not sure about online learning, but now she appreciates the flexibility and convenience for her busy life with school age kids and a working husband. “If I missed a class, it was recorded and I could listen to the recording later in the evening,” she explains.
Being at a distance from instructors and classmates is not an obstacle for Lucine. She has friends from the class who created a support group where they check in every day and work on assignments together.
She already completed three placements in her community and is more aware of the options and opportunities in her field. “Honestly, I didn’t think I could do it,” she shares. “I feel like I have a purpose now. It has changed me!”
Lucine is considering extending her studies and enrolling in a Paralegal program next year.
