Graduated Spring 2020
Melissa McInnes lost her job and reached out to local resources for assistance. She was referred to the Contact North | Contact Nord online learning centre in Shelburne, and after meeting with staff from the online learning centre, she enrolled in Loyalist College’s online Early Childhood Education program.
“I always wanted to be an ECE and teach music in a kindergarten class,” she shares. She is a graduate of Georgian College’s on-campus Music program and considered another on-campus experience. However, when she learned from a friend that she was completing Loyalist College’s online ECE program, her decision was made.
“I have dyslexia and found it challenging to do the readings,” she explains. “I have to be disciplined to get it done.” Although her computer could read some articles out loud, others it could not. “I did find videos online that would help explain some topics.”
During her first semester, Melissa’s mother was diagnosed with cancer and she spent a great deal of time at the hospital. “If I was in the on-campus program I would have failed from missing so many classes,” she says. Her mother did pass away, and the college was extremely supportive during that time.
She completed her 3 placements in Collingwood where she lives and was offered employment by one of the placement organizations.
Melissa graduated in Spring 2020 and hopes she can start work once the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions are lifted.
