Alderville First Nation is governed by a Chief and four councillors who are elected every two years by ballot vote. Council meets bi-monthly and as often as required to safely and efficiently govern the Alderville First Nation. Career Edge has been offering FREE Employment Services to jobseekers and employers for over 30 years, having offices in Campbellford, Napanee, Northbrook, Picton, and Trenton. Jobseekers of all ages receive help with resumes, cover letters, interview skills, job search techniques, and training opportunities, just to name a few. Employers can get assistance with job postings, pre-screening for applicants, possible training incentives, hosting job fairs, and a free, easy-to-use online job bank! We receive client referrals through our partners Ontario Works, the Ontario Disability Support Program, and the Ministry of the Solicitor General (parole & probation), but walk-in and word-of-mouth clients are always welcome.

Employment Programming:
CTDC is in the third year of a 3-yr youth project which will end December 2023. 50-53 youth in Northumberland will have been connected with opportunities for various industry related certificates with over 83% remaining employed or returning to training/education. The goal is to empower youth and prepare them for a successful future.
Senior Projects:
At present CTDC has 2 exciting Senior projects approved from now to Mar 2024. Both projects are focused on social inclusion, specifically:
Horizons for Seniors – building awareness on Longevity with the goal of increased healthy life span. The project offers seniors access to information on a number of topics related to longevity from employment considerations, financial, technology, adapting to climate change, and many more. This will be a series that will have a new issue approximately every 2 weeks. Additional issues will be available through our Facebook page.
Business + Seniors: Building Community Connections – this project has connecting local businesses with seniors and vice versa to learn more about each other – needs and opportunities! Participating businesses will offer a unique “reward” which is made available by scanning a QR code on sight or through website visits/phone calls. If your organization has services/programs that you would like to promote to our seniors, please connect with us and we can provide you with more information in order that you can participate!

Access Our Services
Our services are available in all the communities Fleming serves – Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Haliburton. Work and Academic Upgrading courses are FREE to most residents of Ontario, and we can provide financial help for transportation and child-care expenses for those who qualify.
Skills on Demand – Work and Academic Upgrading is a fit if you:
- Are 19 years of age or older
- Didn’t finish high school
- Have been out of school for a while and need to refresh your academic skills to prepare for college
- Have your high school diploma but are missing prerequisites that you need for a college program or apprenticeship
- Want to refresh your Math, Communications or Computer skills before re-entering the workforce
- Need your “Grade 12 Equivalency” to improve your career prospects
Real Support
Your success is our priority. People learn in different ways and we are committed to working with you to help you reach your goals. Our non-traditional classroom allows for teacher support in a relaxed environment with other adult learners.
In addition to academic assistance, the program provides:
- Career and educational counselling,
- Time management, goal setting and other learning strategies tips
- Help with applications to college and apprenticeship programs when you finish your academic upgrading
- Referrals to community services and resources that can help you move your plans forward

Literacy Ontario Central South works with the Adult Training Network and Fleming Work and Academic Upgrading to support individuals in Northumberland who have a goal of gaining skills to find a job or advance in their current position. We also help others prepare for further education or an apprenticeship.
Our programs are flexible and customized to the goals of each person. This can include support in completing a high school diploma, upgrading before entering a college program and workplace training such as Point-of-Sale or computer skills. In addition to gaining skills in reading, writing and math, individuals in our programs also gain skills such as communication, collaboration, and problem-solving.
For employers, we offer an Organizational Needs Assessment, which identifies skills gaps or training needs of workers. We offer individual assessments, individual or group training, as well as online training.

If you or someone you know is having a hard time paying for rent, utilities or food, Northumberland County Community and Social Services can offer help. There are also programs that can help you search for a job or access education.
Financial Support: If you have little or no income, you might consider applying for financial assistance through Ontario Works. Emergency as well as temporary sustained supports are available for expenses such as basic needs and shelter.
Employment Support: Employment supports are also available through Ontario Works for things like job-specific training, access to basic education, and employment workshops. As of January 2021, skills building, job readiness, and support for job-seekers are all available through the Province’s Employment Ontario. Employment Ontario has teamed up, in our area, with Fleming College, to help people along their path to employment. Fleming College can put job seekers in touch with a number of organizations who are ready to help and have great connections to the local job market.

The Help and Legal Centre of Northumberland (THLCN) promotes social justice, equity, and the right to self-determination through two sister agencies: the Help Centre and the Northumberland Community Legal Centre.
THLCN helps the unemployed and disadvantaged residents of Northumberland County get help for the real world problems of low-income people.
The Help Centre provides programs in Income Security and Housing Security. The Northumberland Community Legal Centre provides clients with legal advice and representation in common areas of the law related to income, employment and housing. Where there is a gap in services for low-income County residents, THCN strives to create innovative programs to fill those gaps.
The services offered by both agencies are available over the phone or in person at our main office, in a satellite office and if necessary, in the client’s home. Regardless of which agency is contacted first, staff makes sure that the client has access to any appropriate program offered by either agency.
Services are free and confidential. Walk-ins are welcome. Toll-free calling is available, and collect calls are accepted by either agency.

For more than 25 years, Watton Employment Services Inc. has assisted unemployed clients; and has supported employers through job matching and training of employees. Watton Employment Services Inc. provides a range of career planning and employment services and delivers Employment Ontario-Employment Services for Northumberland County with funding provided to them from the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) through Fleming College. Watton also works closely with Northumberland Ontario Works (OW) through the WINDOW (Work Integration and Needs Determination for Ontario Works) program, and provides services under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board: Work Transition Program. Financial assistance is available to employers through the Canada-Ontario Job Grant program to provide training for current employees and new hires.
Our professionally trained staff has extensive experience and a successful track record with management of employment services including employment workshops and job development services, as well as, service to people experiencing significant barriers to employment.

The Help and Legal Centre of Northumberland (THLCN) promotes social justice, equity, and the right to self-determination through two sister agencies: the Help Centre and the Northumberland Community Legal Centre.
THLCN helps the unemployed and disadvantaged residents of Northumberland County get help for the real world problems of low-income people.
The Help Centre provides programs in Income Security and Housing Security. The Northumberland Community Legal Centre provides clients with legal advice and representation in common areas of the law related to income, employment and housing. Where there is a gap in services for low-income County residents, THCN strives to create innovative programs to fill those gaps.
The services offered by both agencies are available over the phone or in person at our main office, in a satellite office and if necessary, in the client’s home. Regardless of which agency is contacted first, staff makes sure that the client has access to any appropriate program offered by either agency.
Services are free and confidential. Walk-ins are welcome. Toll-free calling is available, and collect calls are accepted by either agency.
